Solving Matrices

The following instructions apply to a TI83 or TI84 graphing calculator.

A. First enter the matrix to be solved into the calculator. When you are done, hit "2nd" then "quit". Then make sure the screen is clear.

Let's use the following system of equations as an example.

-5x + 3y = -1
2x - 4y = -8



B. Now use the key strokes below to solve the matrix.
  1. "2nd"
  2. "x-1" (matrix)
  3. right arrow to "Math"
  4. Arrow down to "B"



  5. Hit "enter".



  6. "2nd"
  7. "x-1" (matrix)
  8. Hit "enter" at the matrix we are solving. We are solving matrix "A".



  9. 9. The following screen should appear. Close the parenthesis and hit "enter".



    After hitting enter the following screen will appear with the solved matrix.



    This means that x = 2 and y = 3.
