Finding the Maximum and Minimum Points (Turning Points) of a Graph

The following instructions apply to a TI83 or TI84 graphing calculator.

First place the equation into 'y1=' and graph the equation. Then adjust the window so that the turning point(s) are shown on the screen.

Key strokes:
  1. '2nd'
  2. 'trace'
  3. If the point is a maximum hit '3' or if the point is a minimum, hit '4'. In the example above, there is a minimum point.
  4. Arrow over to the turning point.
  5. The calculator is asking for the 'Left bound?'. Move just to the left of the turning point and hit enter.

  6. The calculator is now asking for the 'Right bound?' Move the cursor just to the right of the turning point and hit enter.

  7. The calculator is now saying 'Guess'. Hit enter again.

The turning point is (1.5, -6.25). With all those 9s, round the 'x' value to 1.5.
